Do you know that it’s normal to have around 10-40 moles on your body by the time you’re 25? I know, sounds troubling because you want to keep your skin smooth and fair. Unfortunately, it’s quite impossible to keep blemishes away for long, because age and sun damage are the most common reasons why our skin gets damaged.

Even though in most cases, these spots are completely harmless, they are not pretty to look at in the mirror. I would say that you have to like yourself as you’re and not change due to pressure or worries about what society and people think about you. But if they bother you too much, we are going to talk about seven mind-blowing home remedies for moles.

Before we delve into the world of natural remedies, we will talk about how moles appear and what their signs and symptoms are. I urge you, however, if you find a suspicious spot on your body, to turn to your doctor for advice. Do not use these home remedies if you’re not sure that you’re dealing with moles.

What causes moles?

As I already informed you, it’s normal to have a lot of moles on your body. What you also need to know is that most of these patches appear during childhood and adolescence. But moles also can be present at birth, and they are common in every race and every skin color. Even animals have them.

But what causes these spots to appear on your skin? Well, the medical term for moles is melanocytic nevus. They occur because something goes wrong with your melanocyte – the cells responsible for the pigmentation of your skin, which reside at the bottom layer of the epidermis.

Here’s how it goes. Usually, the melanocytes are spread throughout the skin. However, sometimes they grow into a cluster, instead of spreading as they should. So, when melanocytes form a cluster, a mole appears. We can think about moles as an overgrowth of skin cells, a benign one.

Why that happens is something of a mystery, so specialists don’t know the exact mechanics behind it. It hasn’t been studied so extensively because everybody gets moles and they are usually completely harmless. But several factors might contribute to the appearance of moles:

  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Genes
  • Type of skin

Moles are more common in people with fair skin than people with a tan, which is not a surprise because the lighter your skin, the more vulnerable it is to damage.

Now, you might be wondering what the difference is between moles and sunspots. Sunspots are the direct result of sun damage, which causes the melanocytes to increase the production of melatonin – hence, your skin turns dark.

To summarize – moles are not the result of excess melatonin production, but of melanocytes piling up together.

Signs and symptoms of moles

The question is how to recognize moles from other skin spots, right? Sunspots are very close to moles in appearance. However, they are not usually raised. Warts look like cauliflower, caused by a virus, while skin tags look like a piece of hanging skin.

What Does a Mole Look Like?

What do Moles look like

  • Are usually brown or black
  • Could be flat, raised, or hairy
  • Can change with time – they can grow bigger, get darker, or disappear
  • Can appear anywhere on the body, but most often on sun-exposed areas
  • Are usually no bigger than the head of a pencil eraser

There are three types of moles

  • Congenial nevi – moles present at birth, which have a slightly higher chance of turning into cancer
  • Dysplastic nevi – moles bigger than the head of a pencil eraser with irregular borders. They tend to be hereditary and have an increased chance of becoming cancerous
  • Acquired moles – those who appear during childhood and adolescence and are related to sun exposure

The biggest concern about moles is that they could turn into cancer. So you have to pay close attention to your body. As a rule of thumb, any new moles that appear after you turn 30 are worth a visit to the dermatologist.

Also, you should keep in mind the ABCDE characteristics when observing your moles:

  • Asymmetry – for example, one half of the spot, doesn’t match the other
  • Border – irregular borders are a sign of concern
  • Color – a mixture of colors is bad news
  • Diameter – bigger than a pencil eraser
  • Evolution – change in shape, size, or color

If you notice any of these signs, immediately make an appointment with your dermatologist. Skin cancer – melanoma – is very curable if caught early on.

Home treatments for moles

7 Quick & Easy Home Remedies for Moles that will Work

How to get rid of skin moles is the question you’re probably wondering about, right?. Well, the first thing you have to do before attempting to remove it is to go to the doctor to have it evaluated and biopsied, if necessary.

Don’t ever attempt the home remedies for moles that I’m going to propose if you are not 100% certain that the mole is not cancerous. If it is, you risk doing more damage to your body because cancer might spread.

Also, do not try to cut the mole with a razor blade. You’ll probably get an infection and a thick scar.

  3. A bandage
  4. Rubbing alcohol
  5. Petroleum jelly

  1. Get one garlic clove.
  2. Crush it using the mortar and pestle.
  3. Place the crushed garlic on the mole.

  8. Apply petroleum jelly to the surrounding skin to keep irritation away.
  9. Repeat the process until the mole scabs and disappears.

Notes: Applying garlic to your skin might cause burning sensation, redness, and irritation. In case, the burning increases, stop the treatment, wash the area with water, and apply the cream to soothe the skin. Do not use garlic, if you have sensitive skin.

2. Apple cider vinegar is the “king” of natural remedies

You’ll hardly find a home remedy list without it mentioning apple cider vinegar. There is an excellent reason for that. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of the ACV, it’s perfect for treating various skin conditions, while its acidic nature balance the PH levels of the skin.

But what makes it perfect for getting rid of skin moles? Its acidic properties will burn the spot and scab it over so that it will fall off after a couple of days.

Here are two ways to use apple cider vinegar for treating moles:

Necessary ingredients:

  1. Apple cider vinegar
  2. Cotton balls
  3. Bowl
  4. Medical tape

  7. Repeat the process for at least ten days.

Alternatively, you can use an emery board to scrape the surface of the mole:

Necessary ingredients:

  1. An emery board
  2. Apple cider vinegar
  3. Rubbing alcohol
  4. A bowl
  5. Cotton balls

  1. Start by disinfecting the emery board thoroughly.
  2. Lightly scrape the surface of the mole with the emery board.
  3. Pour a little vinegar in the bowl.
  4. Soak a cotton ball in the liquid.
  5. Apply to the mole.
  6. Wait for it to dry.
  7. Repeat

Notes: Just like garlic, apple cider vinegar might cause redness and irritation. If you notice that the burning sensation gets worse, stop immediately and wash the area with water. If you decide to use the second method, you should be very careful. Scrapping the mole with an emery board can lead to infections.

3. Baking soda and castor oil are a great combination

baking soda

If there is one remedy that is even more popular than apple cider vinegar that is, undoubtedly, baking soda, which is said to prevent/cure even life-threatening conditions like cancer. But is baking soda a wise choice to try to get rid of skin moles? The answer is yes, especially in combination with castor oil.

Both baking soda and castor oil contain enzymes, which will be useful for breaking up the cluster of cells and lightening the skin. What’s more, using castor oil will promote skin healing so that you’re less likely to end up with a scar.

How to prevent moles?

One of the best ways to ensure that your skin is free of moles or other blemishes is to protect it from the harmful UV rays and take good care of it. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Do not go outside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is the strongest.
  • Use sunscreen regularly and apply it at least 30 minutes before going out.
  • Make sure that you have the right sunscreen. Experts recommend one with a sun-protecting factor of at least 15 and one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Remember to reapply the lotion every two hours.
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, long-sleeved blouses to avoid exposure to the sun rays.
  • Do not use tanning beds because they increase the chance of skin damage.

Moles are harmless as long as you keep an eye on them and stay vigilant for any change. They can disappear on their own, but they can also change color due to hormones or pregnancy. Again I stress out that you should not try any home remedies for moles if you are not certain about the nature of the spot.
